Payment Due

They never think about the price. Never.

Not something I understand really, and I've been doing this a long time, let me tell you. Shortcuts. That's what I think it's about. A shortcut to wealth and happiness or whatever it is they've set their little hearts on.

Take Cindy for example. You know the one.

Now, don't get me wrong, she didn't have it easy. Those step-sisters of hers, they gave whole generations of step-siblings a bad name. Her father? Not much better. I suppose you'd say he was detached.

No. Her life wasn't going the way it used to and she couldn't see it improving. Mind you, I don't think making a doormat of yourself will improve anything. But who's asking my opinion? So there she was; a ball in the offing and she with her heart set on it being her ticket out. All she needed was someone to wave a magic wand and everything would be better.

That was my cue.

Dear me but Cindy was a fright. Dressed in rags and dirty with it. Well, we godmothers are used to working with what's available. The dress was easy. A few extensions, some tinsel and Cindy was made presentable. It's wonderful how a properly fitted push-up can lift a girl's confidence. In no time she looked fit for any ball. Footmen, transport; they were harder, but we got it done. Off she went, her head full of fluff and fancy. I gave her the usual warnings about midnight.

I knew she'd forget. They always do. That's why the glass slippers, but I'm sure you guessed that. Hardly the most practical of footwear. And dancing in them? You try it sometime and see what you think. But they were memorable, so it didn't take the Prince long to find the pretty toes he'd been looking at all evening. The Prince and feet? That's another story for another time.

So, Cindy found her way out and they all lived happily ever after.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've an appointment with her.

We have to talk about payment.

  2. I like that. They never think about the price. I know exactly what you mean. Now, like Laura, I'd like to know what that price is ...

  3. Oh, dear. I hope it's not nine months later, but something tells me it might be.

  4. That's a novel spin on an old tale, giving it a noir treatment. I don't need to know what the payment is. Enough to know some gumshoe is out there running after it.

  6. HA! Great read. It is true, a great push-up will get you far.
I am curious what this might cost a girl, so I can start saving up.... set some goals, etc.
Very fun - I loved it!

  7. Fabulous story, and your language is absolutely spot on. I'm guessing you spent a while crafting this story, if not I'm totally envious of your skill!

  8. Thanks to all. You comments are appreciated. I worked on the language. Yes, would love were it to fall "trippingly on the tongue", but no. Not so much.
"...her head full of fluff and fancy" arrived whole, for which I am very grateful. Others were harder.
I have some thoughts for a follow-up. But this stands reasonably well by itself.

  9. Ha! You can't get something for nothing. Awesome twist on the old tale. And I love the FGM's voice. It sure beats bibbity-bobbity-boo.
    Good stuff.
