And the Darkness consumed it not...

As the Earth begins her slow turning again to the sun, those here in the northern latitudes gifted us with these celebrations of returning light. Nights shorten. There is the hope and promise of new life, as there was at the start of this year. As there was in previous years.

These mid-winter festivals celebrated, and still celebrate, that hope. A hope that runs very deep in we humans.

My own religious tradition borrowed from these celebrations of hope, of light, of life. It grafted to them the idea that from small can come great, from little can come plenty, from insignificance can come glory.

Whatever one's tradition, there is truth there. The truth rests on this hope that is the spur to so much of what we, as humans, strive for.

To all, I wish renewed hope. Hope in oneself, hope in and for our flawed humanity, hope for the return of light, of life.

Let there be glory and peace to all.
