Small Stone #7

Across four states, as I drove along, my eye was drawn to the rich red soil around me.

My mind was drawn to the Red Dirt Girl album by EmmyLou Harris.

If you need your heart broken, listen to the title track.

  1. Very different scenery from the golden hills of CA, the green lushness of Ireland, or even the desert hills of Spain.

  2. There's a song by Kate Wolf - "Here in California" with the following in the lyrics:

    Here in California
The fruit hangs heavy on the vines
    There's no gold
    I thought I'd warn you
And the hills turn brown in the summertime

Looking at the hills in the SF Bay Area in Summer, that always came back to me. They turn green in Winter, the rainy season. I'll enjoy the seasons here in KC, but there are aspects (surprise!) of California I'll miss.

The song can be heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR9R6PEIow4

  3. That's so funny! I've always said that CA is called the golden state because calling it the brown state didn't have the same ring to it.
I miss a few things about CA but the traffic and high prices keep me from going back.
